Some interesting things can be found when you google “Tamiflu” and “deaths”. Roche, the makers of Tamiflu estimates that 50 million people have been treated, most of which are in Japan.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration are investigating the deaths of 12 children in Japan who took Roche’s flu-fighting drug Tamiflu.

The U.S. regulators say it is difficult to tell whether the drug played a role in any of the cases but is concerned that 32 psychiatric events, such as hallucinations and abnormal behavior, have been reported in children who took Tamiflu.

It was reported earlier this week by Roche, of the two possible suicides of Japanese youths who took Tamiflu, that there was no clear evidence the drug contributed.

However analysts at Morgan Stanley Equity Research have said that Tamiflu is recognized as causing psychological disturbance, and the apparent suicidal behavior of these two teenagers has been linked to taking Tamiflu.

The FDA said the 12 deaths it was reviewing included one suicide, four cases of sudden death and four cases of cardiac arrest.

According to the FDA, warnings about possible skin reactions may need to updated on the Tamiflu label, as twelve cases have been reported, including one of a severe skin problem known as Steven-Johnsons syndrome that was reported in a 3-year-old.

Federal drug regulators said Friday there was insufficient evidence to tie the flu drug Tamiflu to the deaths of 12 Japanese children or to hallucinations, encephalitis and other symptoms suffered by some Japanese patients.

The FDA says that all but one of the psychiatric problems were reported in Japan.

In a separate summary on the FDA Web site, drug maker Roche says there is no increase in deaths and neuropsychiatric events in patients on Tamiflu versus influenza patients in general.

The ministry confirms that it has concluded that the death of one boy was the result of side effects from the drug. The ministry says it has found 64 cases of psychological disorders linked to the drug in the past four years.

Dr. Rokuro Hama, head of the Japan Institute of Pharmaco-Vigilance, says he has investigated eight suspicious deaths of children aged between two and 17 over the past three years, which he thinks are linked to Tamiflu. He reported his findings Saturday at a meeting of the Japan Society of Pediatric Infectious Diseases.

Dr. Hama said Sunday that Tamiflu appears to be similar to other powerful drugs that can cause behavioral changes.

“These are tranquilizers, sedatives or hypnotics. These cause discontrol or disregulation of the central nervous system. So it may cause very bizarre phenomenon or behavior,” said Dr. Hama.

Investigators say in one case last year, a 17-year-old boy, after taking the medication, left his home during a snowstorm, and jumped in front of a truck and died.

Earlier this year, a 14-year-old boy, after taking one Tamiflu capsule, jumped or fell from the ninth floor of an apartment building.

In October 2005 the Pentagon ordered vaccination of all US military personnel worldwide against what it called Avian Flu, H5N1. Scare stories filled world media. Then, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld announced he had budgeted more than $1 billion to stockpile the vaccine, Oseltamivir sold under the name, Tamiflu. President Bush called on Congress to appropriate another $2 billion for Tamiflu stocks.

What Rumsfeld neglected to report at the time was a colossal conflict of interest. Prior to coming to Washington in January 2001, Rumsfeld had been chairman of a California pharmaceutical company, Gilead Sciences. Gilead Sciences held exclusive world patent rights to Tamiflu, a drug it had developed and whose world marketing rights were sold to the Swiss pharma giant, Roche. Rumsfeld was reportedly the largest stock holder in Gilead which got 10% of every Tamiflu dose Roche sold. 14 When it leaked out, the Pentagon issued a curt statement to the effect that Secretary Rumsfeld had decided not to sell but to retain his stock in Gilead, claiming that to sell would have indicated something to hide.’ That agonizing decision won him reported added millions as the Gilead share price soared more than 700% in weeks.

Panic and fear of death was used by the Bush Administration skilfully to promote the Avian Flu fraud. With ominous echoes of the current Swine Flu scare, Avian Flu was traced back to huge chicken factory farms in Thailand and other parts of Asia whose products were shipped across the world. Instead of a serious investigation into the sanitary conditions of those chicken factory farms, the Bush Administration and WHO blamed ‘free-roaming chickens’ on small family farms, a move that had devastating economic consequences to the farmers whose chickens were being raised in the most sanitary natural conditions. Tyson Foods of Arkansas and CG Group of Thailand reportedly smiled all the way to the bank.

Tamiflu is no mild candy to be taken lightly. It has heavy side effects. It contains matter that could have potentially deadly consequences for a person’s breathing and often reportedly leads to nausea, dizziness and other flu-like symptoms.
